Synthetic or Identical: Hormones For Your Health & Wellbeing

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy Raleigh NCHi, I am N. Daniel Catz, MD and the owner of Evolve Medical Spa.

I would like to speak for a moment about questions I receive regarding hormone replacement therapy.

There are great benefits in the use of Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). There is also a great deal of confusion as to the difference between bio-identical and synthetic hormones, and the benefits or deficits between the two treatment methods. Here are some clarifications regarding BHRT and Synthetic Hormones.

Synthetic versus Bio-identical Hormones:

Is there a difference?

Bio-identical hormones have the exact molecular structure as the hormones that your body produces. Synthetic hormones are chemically altered so what is produced is similar what your body produces, but it can be manufactured due to this chemical alteration and a much lower cost. Another difference and reason that drug companies chemically alter the molecular structure, is because a substance that ones body naturally produces cannot be patented. It must be altered so the molecule would not be produced in nature. Once altered, it can be patented.

Bio-identical hormones are like a key fitting into a lock. Your body recognizes these molecular structures, and interacts with them in the way the ones naturally occurring in your own body would be processed. Where as, synthetic hormones are more like forcing the lock open, because the key does not fit the lock perfectly. They are not metabolized in the body efficiently, and can actually interfere with the natural production of hormones. This can lead to potential side effects.

Risks associated with synthetic hormones:

  • Increased risk of cervical cancer and breast cancers
  • Increased risk o coronary heart disease or stroke
  • Infertility
  • Anxiety/Depression
  • Weight gain

Positive effects of balancing your hormones with bio-identical hormones:

  • Enhances physical strength
  • Improves sleep patterns
  • Improves cognition and attention, and improves mood
  • Improves libido and sexual function
  • Improves hydration and elasticity of skin and mucous membranes
  • Improves bone density
  • Reduces fatigue and body fat
